Environmental Photography & Self-Portraits
Art Direction, Photography, and Editor
Elijah Phillips
I started making environmental and self-portraits
as a way to notice the world around me and my place
in it. I wanted to celebrate and appreciate it, not
critique it. I’m fascinated by the little moments, the quirks,
and the colors of life around me, and through styling,
composition, and framing, I get to explore mood, story,
and self in playful ways. You can learn so much about
yourself and your environment, from how comfortable
you are with how you allow yourself to look, even in
remembrance that it is just a photo and you are a character
of the moment, essentially up for interpretation. It
allows you and others to tell you who they are by
assuming who you are, and then, you have the choice
to accept and assume the position of that role or
decline and change. Either way, it brings an opportunity
to look in the mirror and the choice of acceptance,
which is powerful. It’s my favorite form of therapy.
Every “Artpop” inspired photo becomes a memory
or character of my past that reveals something new
about the relationship between identity, perspective,
expression, or the lack thereof.
